Three free-tier chat tools that look similar at first glance. They're really not. Here's the honest version.
This is the three-way comparison that "best live chat" listicles never bother with. We'll cover Tawk.to, Tidio, and Agentbot (yes, our product — and we'll say where the others beat us). At the end you should know which one to pick for your specific team.
TLDR — which to pick when
- Pick Tawk.to if: price is the only criterion, you're OK with "Powered by Tawk.to" branding, and you don't care about AI quality. Tawk is genuinely free forever; that's the entire pitch and it's a strong one.
- Pick Tidio if: you're a Shopify store leaning on cart-recovery automations, or you need translated widget UI for non-English audiences. Tidio's Shopify integration depth and multilingual UI are class-leading.
- Pick Agentbot if: you want AI as the first responder (not a paid-tier upsell), no per-seat tax as your team grows, and signed webhooks for integration into your existing stack. Free during open beta.
Now the long version.
Pricing reality
This is the table that listicles never publish:
| Tool | Free tier reality | First real paid plan |
|---|---|---|
| Tawk.to | Truly free forever, branded, $19/mo to remove branding | Add-ons à la carte |
| Tidio | Free with conversation cap, AI requires Plus tier | Starter $24/mo, Plus $749/mo |
| Agentbot | Free during beta, no caps, all features | TBD post-beta |
Tawk's free is the most honest. They monetize via hired chat agents ($1/hr) and branding-removal — not via tier upsells on the free product.
Tidio's free is technically generous but the AI is the real product, and serious AI lives on Plus at $749/month. The "free" plan is a trial of the chat surface; the AI you'd actually want is paywalled.
Agentbot is currently $0 with everything on. We're being explicit that this is a beta — when paid lands, the planned model is no per-seat tax and a free tier that keeps the essentials. Buy the promise or don't; we get that "trust us, the paid tier will be reasonable" is doing some work in this column.
AI capability
All three tools have AI in 2026. The question is how good.
Tawk AI Assist is positioned as a feature that helps human agents draft replies. It's not the first responder; the human is. Useful for the agent, less so for the visitor — the visitor still waits for a human.
Tidio Lyro is the closest direct comparison to Agentbot. LLM-backed, RAG over uploaded docs, files tickets, hands off. It's good. The catch is the paywall: serious Lyro usage requires the Plus tier ($749/month), and even on lower tiers Lyro conversations are metered as a separate billable item.
Agentbot's AI is the first responder by default — every conversation starts with the AI, which retrieves from your knowledge base on every turn and only hands off when it genuinely can't help. Page-aware (sees the URL the visitor is on). Same LLM-based approach as Lyro under the hood — both are competitive on quality.
Honest verdict: Agentbot and Tidio Lyro are roughly equivalent on AI quality; Tawk is a tier below. The differentiator is pricing model (Tidio meters, Agentbot includes) and surfacing (Agentbot is AI-first by default, Tidio you have to enable).
Setup speed
| Tool | Time to live widget | Time to functional AI |
|---|---|---|
| Tawk.to | 60 seconds | N/A (AI is assist-only) |
| Tidio | 60 seconds | 5–10 min if Lyro is on your tier |
| Agentbot | 60 seconds | 5 min (upload KB, configure persona) |
All three are one <script> tag installs. The differences emerge in how quickly you get a productive AI:
- Tawk: doesn't apply — AI is for agents not visitors.
- Tidio: depends on which tier you're on. If you're on a paywalled tier with Lyro, setup is similar to Agentbot.
- Agentbot: upload your docs, configure persona, done.
For raw "drop the widget" time, they're identical. For "first useful AI conversation", Agentbot edges ahead because the AI ships on for free; with Tidio you may or may not be on the right tier.
Webhooks & extensibility
| Tool | Webhook support |
|---|---|
| Tawk.to | Webhook events exist but the surface is thin |
| Tidio | Webhooks + Zapier app |
| Agentbot | HMAC-signed webhooks with documented payload, no SDK |
If your stack is HubSpot + Slack + Notion, Tidio's Zapier app makes the common cases one-click. Agentbot doesn't (yet) have a Zapier app — but you can wire it through Zapier's Catch Hook in 5 minutes (guide here). Tawk's webhooks are functional but not first-class.
For a developer-led team that wants to pipe events into a custom backend, Agentbot's signed webhooks are the cleanest. For a team that wants no-code automation via Zapier with native app support, Tidio is the easier path today.
Where each one still wins
Tawk.to wins on:
- Genuine zero-cost forever (no beta uncertainty, no "when paid lands")
- Massive install base, platform stability
- Hired chat agents ($1/hr) — outsourced staffing as an option
Tidio wins on:
- Shopify-specific automations (cart recovery, abandoned checkout)
- Translated widget UI (5+ languages out of the box)
- Mature Zapier app
Agentbot wins on:
- AI in the base product, not a paywalled upsell
- No per-seat tax (Tidio scales per-conversation, not per-seat — but seats matter elsewhere)
- HMAC-signed webhooks, open documented payload
- Multi-site from one dashboard (agency use case)
Verdict
If you've read this far: you probably know which one you are.
- Solo founder, indie SaaS, small team, AI-first matters → Agentbot (free during beta) → drop the script
- Shopify store, cart recovery is a priority → Tidio (we lose this one; their e-commerce specificity is real)
- Bootstrapped, can't justify any cost, OK with branding → Tawk.to
All three are honest options for different use cases. Listicles that crown one "best live chat tool 2026" are selling something — usually their affiliate links.
For a deeper Agentbot side-by-side with each: vs Tawk, vs Tidio, vs Intercom, vs the rest.
